Something to show you

With boys like mine, I cringe inside just a little everytime either of them says "hey Mom, I have something to show you!" You just never know what it could be: jumping off a roof, walking across the top of the monkey bars, blackened scissors that were just used to cut through live electrical wire, the list goes on*.

This afternoon's "hey Mom, I have something to show you" is in the gross, rather than dangerous category. So consider yourself warned before you scroll down and see the picture.

I was making a dessert for home group, when Nate & Max came running it. "Hey Mom, I have something to show you!" Nate exclaimed and Max echo'ed. I explained I didn't have time to look and asked what it was. Nate said "I really just want to show you." So I said "Can you please just tell me?" So I on his way back out the door Nate said "There is a squirrel in the pool." "Wait," I said. "Is it dead or alive?" Nate said "I'm pretty sure its dead" and headed back out the door, that's when I noticed a stick in his hand. So I got to say something I never have before: "Don't poke the dead squirrel in the pool with the stick!" Nate assured me he had not touched the squirrel.

Then I sent Derek out to deal with the situtation. My husband must love me and this blog because he decided we needed a picture.

*This is a list of things I've actually been called to see, except the blackened scissors. Derek found those along with damaged extension cord on his own last week. When confronted with the scissors Nate said. "Oh that must have happened during all the sparks!" I'm glad I didn't see it and I'm even more glad that God is watching out for him!

Dance 2009

Dance week is one of the busiest weeks of our year. For some reason it always falls the week of VBS so Derek & the kids are busy every morning. Then Kaylee & I are busy every evening. But its also a fun week, I really enjoy the extra one on one time with Kaylee. This year especially, I notice how much she's grown and I realize that my time with her is limited.

This year Kaylee performed in seven numbers in her recital compared to last year's three. She has really stepped up as a dancer this year. She's worked very hard and it has really paid off.

We used to wonder about the kids that were in so many dances each year. Why did their parents let them do all of it? How did they afford it? Now we know, that when your child truly loves something you want them to have every opportunity to excel. Plus recital is a lot more interesting when your child is in a lot of numbers!

Here's Kaylee's rack of costumes. She had to make 8 costume changes before the end of the show because they take their final bows in their solo costumes.

This was Kaylee's first year in The Danceline opening production number. She really enjoyed being a part of this large group. It required Saturday practices, which were a sacrifice for the whole family, but Kaylee really liked the dance. It was a compliation of songs from recitals over the years and it was really a lot of fun.

This was also Kaylee's first year with a solo. She danced as the Cheshire Cat during the Alice in Wonderland production.

Kaylee also became a classroom assistant this year and helped with preschool classes on Monday. Kaylee enjoyed working with the little kids and we enjoyed the fact that she earned some credits toward her tutition. Working with the little ones has made Kaylee think that maybe she would like to be a teacher someday.

The Lyrical number was a multi-class number. The littlest girls wore pink, the younger intermediate group wore purple and the older intermediate group wore blue. The song was "Heal the World." It was a pretty dance.

Kaylee really enjoys her Acrobat class. This year she did a round-off, backhand spring in the recital. She didn't really like this costume though.

This is her jazz group. Most of these girls shared a dressing room. They just had so much fun together. This was Kaylee's first year in jazz. I really liked the number- you could tell the girls really enjoyed the performance.

A bunch of Kaylee's friends from youth group came to the show on Wednesday. Kaylee was so excited to have them all cheering her on. We are so thankful that God has blessed us and Kaylee with a loving church home.

I didn't end up with pictures of the Pointe & Ballet costumes because the costumes changes were too quick. In fact, we had to change from the point tutu to the ballet skirt side stage. I have professional pictures of those though.

It was a great year. Kaylee has made new friends and has learned a lot. I'm sure next year will be just as exciting. She has 2 weeks off then she has a summer intensive dance camp the week before summer classes start. It's fun to see how committed she is to doing her best at this. And this is good practice, we remind her that God calls us to do our best at whatever we are doing. He has big plans for her, his plans might not involve dance but at least she'll know what its like to put maximum effort into doing something and doing it well.

compliments

I know I've been MIA lately. Dance recital time is always a little crazy. Recitals are finished and we have a couple weeks until summer dance starts. I'll have a dance post with pictures up soon. (There are some photos on facebook already).

In the meantime here is a fun conversation with Max today to tide you over.

Me, explaining to Max why I don't want to go swimming: "Max, I don't feel good."

Max: "You don't look good."

Me: "Oh, Max!"

Max: "Well, you're old."

Out the window

This weekend while Max and I were cleaning his room, we discovered a basket with 4 pacifiers in his closet. Max hasn't really used a "pipie" as we call it in approximately 6 months, but he was thrilled to find these.

I said, "Do you remember these? Babies suck on them."

Max said "I'm a big boy. I eat them!"

He played with the pacifiers quite a bit on Saturday & Sunday. (He did remember that sucking on them is very relaxing.) On Sunday night after home group I tried to get Max to tell Andy & Denise what big boys do with pacificers. That time his response was "throw them out the window!"

This morning Max woke up and said "I want my pipies." But this time they have disappeared for good. I'll miss them because they do represent the baby stage and Max is my last baby. But he is a big boy now so its time for the pipies to go out the window before someone eats them!

We have a picture just like this of Nate on his second birthday. We were in a hotel on vacation. He took all his pacifiers out of his bag and was standing in front of the mirror seeing how many he could fit in his mouth at once. That was his last weekend with pipies too.
