He's been my slowest to talk- at 19 months he's just starting to become a little chatterbox. For along time his one of his few words was "milk." Pretty much any liquid in any glass was "milk." Then it became "my milk."
In the evenings, I generally drink Diet Coke. Max would point to my silver can and say "my milk." I would say. "No. My Diet Coke." So Max recently added "Diet Coke" to his vocabulary.
I was eager to show off his new words. So at a graduation open house on Saturday, when the church secretary, Carol came up with her silver can- I said to Max- "What's that?" As clear as could be Max responded "Diet Coke." Carol is grandma to a little boy about the same age and she was thrilled with his response too.
Then I tried to take our show on the road. It flopped. Aron & Erica were our first victims, I mean audience. They were both drinking diet cokes. I thought it was a perfect opportunity. But when I asked him, he answered so quietly, they had no idea what he said. Maybe his sudden shyness was just do to the presence of their adorable 20 month old- Belle.
On Sunday, we had a birthday party, so we tried again, this time with much more success. Max's proclamations of "DIET COOOOOKKKKKEEE!" had everyone drinking soda giggling. Except Daddy (a non-soda drinker) who by then was rolling his eyes. I told Daddy watch out or I'll start taking Max to Starbucks with me in the mornings. How long do you think it will take me to teach Max "Non-fat, Peppermint Latte?"
